Shed care, maintenance and accessories

After choosing your perfect garden shed, it doesn’t stop there! Like most large items, there are plenty of accessories that can help make your garden shed more usable and more productive for your garden.

Shed Treatments

The treatments needed to protect your garden shed is really only applicable to wooden garden shed. As wood is a natural product, it needs help maintaining its strong structure and ensuring it lasts for may years.

The 2 main treatments are:

  • Dip Treatments – this is where the wooden boards used to assemble the shed are simply dipped in a wood preserving treatment. this adds a basic level of protection to the wood but will not last as long. This treatment will need to be maintained by the end user by applying annual levels of preservative to maintain the protection.
  • Pressure Treated – this process is a long term effective protection against rot. Each board is subjected to a preservative under high pressure which forces the preservative deep into the wood. This means that the wood is protected throughout and not just on the surface.  Annual treatments are not required and products built with pressure treated timber can last up to 15 years.

Shed Bases

One of the most important part of your shed is the base. If the base is wrong or not sufficient then this will affect your garden shed. There are 3 main methods for creating a garden shed base.

The 3 main base constructions are:

  • Wooden Base – a wooden base is constructed from pressure treated timber joists. The wooden base will ensure your sheds sits off the ground. If the wooden base is not installed correctly, or sub standard material is used then your shed may become unstable.
  • Concrete bases – there are 2 ways to do a concrete base. You can pour a large solid concrete slab that is the same size of your shed. This will allow the shed to sit directly on the concrete slab and be strong and sturdy. You can also secure your shed to this concrete slab if required.
The second option is to lay a separate level surface using individual concrete slabs, similar to your patio. Again this provides a secure base for your shed to sit on but it must be laid flat to ensure your shed will not be damaged.
  • Plastic bases – a plastic base kit consists of several interlocking grid pieces that lock together to form a firm rigid base. These pieces can then be filled with aggregate to give more support and also allow ventilation under the shed to ensure your shed doesn’t rot. To help the environment, these are normally made from 100% recycled materials.

Shed Accessories

Your shed will come as a simple but secure place for your items. Depending on your requirements, you may want other items to help make your shed more secure or more usable.

Some accessories are below

  • Windows – have you considered upgrading the windows on your shed? Depending on your usage you may want to upgrade to windows that open? You may want a double glazed window for added security? Options are available.
  • Locks – have you considered a lock for your shed? If you are storing valuable items then you will ideally want to lock them away. You may wish to go with a hasp and staple style closure with a padlock? Another option would be mortice style lock that would allow a key the same as your house?
  • Guttering – have you considered having guttering in your roof? Your garden shed could be a good source of water for filling up your water butts. By simply adding some guttering you can not only take the water away from the sides of your shed, but also capture it for watering your plants.
  • Shelving – do you need shelving in your shed? This can be a great and easy way to utilise the space you have. Adding a few free standing shelves can give you that extra space to store more of your items.
